Things to do

Here are a few helpful recommendations about how to make the most of your life at IIT Guwahati
  • Ask for help if you need it, be it in academics, financial, mental or otherwise. You have friends here. And helpful seniors, counsellors if you need them.Ragging is a crime, any form of casual interaction with seniors is expected to be taken sportively, you can always walk away.
  • Issue textbooks. After you get your provisional ID card, treat the first library working day as the Flipkart Big Billion Day sale. Rush into the crowd of unknowns and pick up as many required / recommended textbooks as that ID card can afford you. Maybe even find a partner in crime or two in the process. If the stack of books makes you question the tensile strength of the shelf in your room, congratulations, you have done a good job. Then, try to make good use of them.
  • Undertake a 'trip' to the View Point. Try out all the features and settings of your/your friend's shiny smartphone camera. Make all those poses your JEE brain of 2 months prior would have deemed too stupid for an intellectual such as you. Publish these photos on your 30+ social media outlets pretending to have visited a nature retreat. While you are there, you should also spend a second or two enjoying the beauty of IIT Guwahati.
  • Walk to every nook and cranny of this 700-acre majesty. Identify one spot as your group's exclusive haunt. Survey the area - measure sound levels in decibels, analyse the lighting, measure the distance to the nearest security checkpost and the nearest IITG_WIFI hotspot.
  • Though sleeping in library is strictly prohibited, you will always find the sound of snoring more disturbing than the sound of students discussing doubts!
  • Staying in your hostel rooms silently doing nothing is a big NO. Sure, spend time studying, but get out of those rooms as frequently as possible.
  • Attempting to solve your tutorials on your own is highly recommended. But sometimes these stunts cannot be performed at hostel rooms without expert’s guidance.(Read: Internet/TA/Friends)
  • It sometimes takes awfully long to get things repaired, we're an Indian institute after all, be careful not to wreck public necessities like washing machines, taps, or anything people might require on a daily basis.
  • For creativity, all seniors become bhaiyas and didis by default. (No one knows why!)
  • Most of the professors understand the stresses of undergraduate life and do not disturb you if you fall asleep in their class sometimes. But, try to avoid this as much as possible. Always try to get your beauty sleep at night. Just like it was meant to be.
