About

Engineering Physics (a.k.a EP), as the name suggests, is an amalgamation of engineering and physics. It is not the physics of engineering. It is a mixture of subjects in physics and subjects in electrical engineering. The department is housed in the last core of the academic complex a.k.a Core IV.

Course Structure

The first year Course Structure is a concoction of the basic courses of all disciples, that gives a foundation to engineering. After the first year, the program is divided into theoretical physics and engineering courses. Along with courses to provide a strong mathematical foundation, the theoretical physics courses include advanced classical mechanics, quantum mechanics and the branches of physics arising from them. These courses provide an in depth analysis of the theoretical foundation of physics applied in modern day research, while providing a mathematical overview of the techniques and formulations required for students interested in areas like solid state, spectroscopy, material sciences and high energy physics. The engineering courses include analog and digital electronics, engineering optics, microprocessors architecture and electronics lab among others. Some features of the program include shared classrooms with other departments such as Signals, Systems and Networks (ECE/EEE course) and Biophysics (BSBE) for an overview of current multidisciplinary research and applied physics in different disciplines. A prime attraction of the program includes electives, where one can specialise in a particular topic, dealing with physics or any other subject that might pique one's curiosity . Many students take up advanced courses such as high energy physics, cosmology and theory of relativity in their final year. However, many people also take up advanced courses outside physics in computer science, biosciences, electronics and others, along with their final year thesis.

Future Opportunities

EP's flexibility helps students realise their interests in research and industry. Students of EP have gone on to study and work in varied fields from biology to computer science. Like a famous man once said,

"All science is either physics or stamp collecting"

The scope in terms of research is unlimited. With regards to placements, the students of EP have been placed in a wide variety of companies from software development to marketing.
