About

Mechanical Engineering (ME) is the oldest and one of the largest departments in IIT Guwahati. Situated in Core 1 of the academic complex, it surrounded by a serene and green environment much like the rest of the campus. The department also houses the Automobile Club which is mentored by professors from the mechanical department. Mechanical Engineering boasts of state of the art labs and workshops.

Course Structure

The four year Bachelor’s course in Mechanical Engineering has a widespread and versatile curriculum. The curriculum covers topics such as Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Mechatronics, Manufacturing Technology and Thermal Engineering. Unlike other departments, most of the courses in the programme do not have tutorial sessions. While that significantly reduces your workload, it also means you will have to practice problems on your own if you wish to perform well in the exams. Despite typically having a batch of 80 students, they are divided into two sections of forty each so as to give enough attention to every student. Lesser number of students in a class makes it easier for the students to interact with the professor.

Future Opportunities

Having a degree in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Guwahati opens a wide range of possible career options. While a fair number of students opt for a job right after their graduation, quite a few also opt to continue studying in fields such as Automobile Engineering, Design and Instrumentation, Aerospace, Construction and Mining, Manufacturing, and Robotics+AI. Every year, several ME undergraduates from IIT Guwahati join reputed universities such as TU-Delft and Carnegie Mellon (CMU). For those who want to take up a job, several companies such as Mahindra and Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, Hero, Tata Motors and L&T recruit ME undergraduates during the placement season. The prestigious Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also recruits undergraduates of ME from IIT Guwahati.
