About Us
The Department of Physics at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is a vibrant venue for teaching and research, with a strong presence at the national and international levels. With a dedicated team of 45 faculty members, 15 staff members, 181 Ph.D. scholars, and 22 postdoctoral researchers, the Department provides an intellectually stimulating environment for students aspiring to pursue careers in physics and interdisciplinary areas. Supported by state-of-the-art research facilities and a strong culture of collaboration, the Department actively contributes to both fundamental and applied research.
The Department's research spans a broad spectrum of contemporary physics through its six major research groups: Condensed Matter Physics Experiment, Condensed Matter Physics Theory, Gravity, Astrophysics and Cosmology (GrAC), High Energy Physics, Laser and Photonics, and Quantum Optics and Quantum Technology. Research encompasses areas such as semiconductor physics, quantum materials, thin films and nanostructures, electronics and optoelectronics, spintronics, energy materials physics, quantum and nonlinear optics, photonics, quantum information, Higgs and particle physics, dark matter, black hole thermodynamics, early- and late-time cosmology, quantum fluids, quantum technologies, and related interdisciplinary areas.
Apart from its frontline research activities, the Department offers a two-year M.Sc. programme in Physics, introduced in 2000, and a four-year B.Tech. programme in Engineering Physics, introduced in 2006, providing students with a strong foundation in fundamental physics and its modern applications. The Department also runs an active Ph.D. programme running continuously since August 1996 in both experimental and theoretical physics which forms the backbone of its research activities. To date, the Department has produced more than 750 M.Sc. graduates, over 550 B.Tech. Engineering Physics graduates, and nearly 300 Ph.D. scholars. The research ecosystem is further strengthened by postdoctoral researchers, appointed through the Institute's IPDF scheme and the national-level NPDF/DST scheme, along with collaborations with leading academic and research institutions in India and abroad.
The Department has established a strong record of research publications, awards, patents, and interdisciplinary collaborations, supported by advanced experimental and computational facilities including DST-FIST-supported infrastructure that enable researchers and students to pursue cutting-edge problems across diverse areas of physics. The Department also encourages interdisciplinary research through collaborations with focused research centres and various engineering departments of IIT Guwahati.

The Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, is nearly a quarter century old, and has made it's mark at national and international levels. Based on the solid foundation of state of the art undergraduate and masters degree programmes, the department is thriving with cutting edge research done by 40 member strong faculty and over a 100 research students. The department has lately gained remarkable visibility by producing brilliant undergraduate, masters and Ph.d. students who are employed in various world renowned institutes and industries as well as by being part of numerous collaborative efforts with the leading groups in the areas of condensed matter physics, laser and photonics, high energy physics and gravitation, cosmology and astrophysics. The department encourages young and brilliant minds to join various programmes of the department and engage themselves in interdisciplinary research by associating themselves with various focused research centres and Engineering departments of IIT Guwahati. Being a part of the premier technological school of the country, the department offers a broad spectrum of the fabulous innovations and applications of ideas in basic sciences to make an impact in the international arena.
