Cells are organized into specific membrane-bound compartments called as organelles. These organelles have distinct structures and enable optimum functioning of cells. Biogenesis of organelles is strictly regulated and so is their turnover. Dysfunctional organelles are associated with several debilitating conditions such as neurodegeneration, cancer, diabetes and certain rare genetic disorders. However, the molecular details and pathways affected are not completely understood. Current projects in the lab are trying to address some important questions such as organelle biogenesis (peroxisome biogenesis), molecular alterations that lead to dysfunctional organelles in disease conditions (mitochondrial dysfunction, neurodegeneration), how alterations in organelles are associated with ageing and disease (peroxisomes and ageing). To answer these, we use a combination of genetic, molecular, biochemical and microscopy-based approaches using yeast as a model system.
