Title: Landscape and Meaning
Abstract:
In this presentation, Punjab-based visual artist Shashank Peshawaria will introduce aspects of his lens-based practice, which traces aesthetic, social, and cultural patterns through architecture and landscape. He will discuss the methodologies of his recent works made in Punjab and other parts of north India—encompassing photography, moving image, and sound—that speak to themes of South Asian migration, colonialism, infrastructure, identity and labour. Through pictures, the presentation will highlight Peshawaria’s interest in the poetic and political dimensions of quotidian and vernacular forms, and in the subterranean meanings of land and memory. Peshawaria will outline his artistic approach to particular sites and spaces, including the often overlooked, unknown, or hidden features that define a place. He will also talk about the role of archives and field-based research in his creative process.
