Project: Mapping Kāmarūpa: Land Grants, Settlement Geographies, and Urbanisation through Epigraphic Study
This postdoctoral project at the Centre for Indian Knowledge Systems, IIT Guwahati, examines the copper-plate charters and other available inscriptions of ancient Assam (Kāmarūpa) to reconstruct the region's historical geography and settlement patterns, under the mentorship of Prof. Sukanya Sharma and Prof. Uday S. Dixit. Drawing on inscriptions dated from the 5th to 12th centuries CE, the study combines epigraphic analysis, toponymic identification, and GIS-based mapping to locate the land grants and boundaries recorded in these charters. The project also explores the socio-economic and political context of land donations across successive dynasties, and investigates the emergence of urbanisation in early Assam.
