Virtual Symposium
International Day of Light
IDL-2020

Department of Phyics
IIT Guwahati

16th May, 2020

In the process of development of mankind, the importance of light has been very significant. On a basic note, the existence of life depends on the photosynthesis process - which is entirely a light based phenomenon! The application of light and light-based technologies revolutionized the field of medicine, communication, entertainment, culture - which in turn made a strong impact on the society globally. So, after the highly successful International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015, UNESCO has endorsed 16th May as annual International Day of Light (IDL) . The reason behind choosing this particular date as IDL, is the anniversary of the first successful operation of Laser in the year 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. Keeping in mind that IDL is not just about Lasers and science, it also includes the sustainable development and growth of societal health and well-being, we are very happy to announce that IEEE Photonics Society Student Chapter IIT Guwahati and SPIE students Chapter IIT Guwahati are going to celebrate the IDL in the Department of Physics, IIT Guwahati on 16th May, 2020 through online mode. We would like to inform you that the event will start at 9.30 am (Indian Standard Time) and will comprise of a series of video lectures by eminent scientist and faculty members. With the experienced and wonderful talk by Prof. Brian Culshaw (University of Strathclydeclyde, Glasgow), Prof. Kishan Dholakia (University of St. Andrews, UK), Prof. Martin Booth (Oxford University, UK), Prof. Ranjan Singh (NTU Singapore), Prof. Ashok Mahapatra (NISER Bhubaneswar), Prof. Sudipta Maiti (TIFR Mumbai) and Prof. Naresh Chand (Associate Vice President, Chapter Relations, IEEE Photonics Society), we hope that, this symposium will give all the participants a deep insight into the world of various research aspects of optics and photonics and will give us all a positive energy in the middle of this COVID-19 pandemic
