  • Vimal Katiyar and Neelima Tripathi, Biobased Adhesive Formulation for Structural Applications. Application Number: 980/KOL/2015.
  • Summary of Patent: Present invention describes the formulation of hydroxycarboxylic acid and gum based conjugate, and its synthesis process for the preparation of pressure sensitive adhesive that can be useful in a variety of applications such as lamination of stones, granites, glasses, sealing cartons, bottle labeling, etc. This adhesive formulation is nontoxic, biobased, eco-friendly compostable which can prepared by simple, elegant and industrially viable process. More specifically, present invention describes the novel adhesive formulation which can be prepared by in-situ polycondensation of hydroxycarboxylic acids/oligomers and its conjugates with polysaccharides/proteins. The invention also describes hydrophilic-hydrophobic interaction and phase conversion of molecules and the process of its preparation. The hydrophilic raw materials after reaction were converted to hydrophobic product. The prepared novel adhesive is biobased and an eco-friendly material. The prepared adhesive has an excellent ability to bind glass and granite substrates. The synthesized biobased adhesive showed excellent shear strength and other matchless properties with respect to the present biobased adhesives and has a comparable results with the present petroleum based adhesives. Thus, it has the capability to replace the present commercial adhesive products. The technology has been developed and tested for commercialization. Therefore, high performance biobased adhesive can be produced and commercialized.

  • Vimal Katiyar, Akhilesh Kumar Pal and Neelima Tripathi, Dispersible Biobased Additive Formulation for Biodegradable Polymer Packaging. Application Number: 981/KOL/2015.
  • Summary of Patent:The research work is focused on the extraction of biodegradable polymers such as chitosan, its modification to overcome the limitations and its utilization to improve various properties. Chitosan is extracted from Muga silkworms by chemical method with significant yield ~7 wt%. The film forming ability of chitosan has been explored by modifying its chemical structure in order to overcome the limitation of uniform dispersion due to its hydrophilic nature. Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and grafted chitosan are utilized as matrix and nano-filler respectively for the preparation of PLA/grafted chitosan bionanocomposite films by solution casting as well melt extrusion based industrially viable technique to achieve targeted barrier, thermal and mechanical properties. TEM analysis confirms the grafted chitosan is homogeneously dispersed in PLA matrix and forms core-shell morphology which helps in the improvement of oxygen permeability (OP) upto 10 folds than that of PLA. The percentage elongation (%E) has been improved significantly up to 386% with increasing filler concentration. The glass transition temperature (Tg) is reduced more than 18ºC without compromising its mechanical properties. Hence, PLA/grafted chitosan bionanocomposite films can be one of the best substitute to increase food shelf life in packaging applications.

  • Vimal Katiyar, Amit Kumar and Prodyut Dhar, Poly (lactic acid) Nanocomposites formulation and method of making thereof. Application Number: 201631022079
  • Summary of Patent: The present invention describes poly (lactic acid) and cellulose based formulation through one-step reactive extrusion process by fabricating nanocellulosic polymeric sheets/films/pellet/fiber/irregular geometries in presence of compatibilizing agents such as inorganic, organic fillers, biopolymers, vegetable oil and different acid derived nanocelluloses. Further, the fabricated nanocellulose based polymeric sheets are easily processible with significantly improved necking ratio and thickness swell ratio along with the enhancement in molecular weight, thermo-mechanical and barrier properties. Introduction of the different compatibilizers induced synergestic, nucleating and anti-nucleating crystallization phenomenon in the reactively grafted nanocomposites. The reactively grafted PLA nanocomposites films with different compatibilizers enhanced the hydrolytic degradation rate as well as improves the shelf-life of oil and dairy based products.
