The Doctoral Research

The  topic for doctoral research is “Omics Logic Based Precision Approach to produce Biofertilizers through Biodegradation of Sustainable and Conventional Polymers: An Efficacy Analysis Study in Soil”.

The project is being duly supervised by Prof. Sreedeep S. and Prof. Vimal Katiyar.

A holistic strategy is needed for plastic waste management, ensuring not only technical feasibility but also economic sustainability for a future, resilient to climate change and environmental degradation. Strategies are required to be improvised to add value to the polymer products at the end of their life-cycle without damaging the homeostasis of the ecosystem.

The objective of this project has therfore been to explore the efficacy of transforming plastics (conventional and bioplastics) as biofertilizer. The study aims to use cutting edge computational analytical tools on sequenced metagenome and transcriptome for creating new consortia or exploiting existing microbial community for enhancing rates of plastic degradation while trying to create a potent fertilizer product, tried and tested in crop-growing soil.

The Pandemic Journey

The Covid 19 pandemic wrecked havoc on the human civilization , with every human being fighting for existence in the truest sense of the word. The research sector and the academic sector as a whole faced an unprecedented crisis, where each and every stakeholder suffered unimaginably.

The students in undergraduate and post-graduate programmes lost precious years in college life while being heavily deprived of research and industral exposure.

To address the issue in my humble capacity by providing the minimal research exposure, while also harbouring and sharpening my own skills, necessary for overseeing the project for PhD, I collaborated with students across the length and breadth of the country in some independent mini projects during the second wave of the pandemic while all education campuses had to be abruptly shut down.

They may be listed as follows:

  1. ” Predictng the impact of Industry 4.0 and Green Revolution 2.0 in  the Indian Food Sector post the Covid 19 Pandemic through Data Science and Machine Learning.”
  2. “Challenges and Strategies of Water Supply and Wastewater Management in Coastal Urban and Semi-Urban Areas”
  3. “A systematic review on the application of Data Science, AI and Machine Learning in the Covid 19 Pandemic”
  4. “Exploring the causes of the Second Wave of Covid 19 in India through the application of data science”
  5. “Prediction of a model to understand change of Global Food Consumption Pattern in pre and post
pandemic worlds through application of data science”
  6. “Identifying Factors of resilience in Polymer Waste Management for short-and long-term climate
change mitigation using supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques”
  7. “Impact of Plastics in the socio-economic disaster of climate change: The roadbloacks to sustainability”

The design for a Low Cost Sustainable Vaccine Cabinet developed alongside Shri Antariksha Sarkar for a call by the Office of the Principal Scientific Advisor, Government of India , was highly appreciated and is being considered for industrial manufacturing.

A memorable accolade, where our team reached the Finals of Top 10. The project included the screening of natural compounds and phytohemicals for potent Covid-19 drug by the mechanism of furin inhibition. The resultant publication is curently under process.

An Interview

An interview was taken by Ft. Garima Kukreja that was published in the October 2021 edition of the “Monthly Bites” Magazine.

An image clicked in one of the sampling sessions, at the Boragaon Dumping Yard, Guwahati, which reminds us of the setting sun, reminiscent of the plastic disaster looming upon mankind.
