The Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati offers summer internships to undergraduate and postgraduate students to enable them to work with the mentors who are faculty members of the Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati. The tantative duration of the internship is from May 17, 2019 to July 18, 2019.

Applications are invited from interested students of recognized Colleges/ Universities/ Institutes in India (other than IIT Guwahati) for these internships.

    Last date of receipt of completed application at the office of the Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati is April 12, 2019.

    Eligibility for Applying:

    1. The student must be enrolled in the 2nd year of B.A./B.Sc./B.C.A. or 3rd year of B.E./B.Tech./B.S./M.Sc(Integrated)/M.Tech(Integrated)/B.S.-M.S.(Dual) or 1st year of M.A./M.Sc/M.C.A/M.Tech. at the time of application.

    2. Students should have a strong motivation to carry out work in Mathematics, Statistics or Computer Science through the Summer Internship Programme.


    An applicant should submit:

    1.      (Compulsary) The online Application Form .

    2.      (Compulsary) Forwarding Letter (in the prescribed format) by the Head of the Department/Institute of his/her present institute.

    3.      (Optional) The applicant, if he/she wishes, may submit a Write-up on the proposed work for the internship along with the application.

    How to apply:

    1.      Register yourself on REGISTRATION by filling up the online registration form with your basic information.

    2.      Log in  LOGIN. Fill up the application form.

    3.      The applicant should mention possible mentors in order of preference among the available list of faculty members in the online application form. The list of the faculty members who are willing to take summer interns, their research interests and the tentative duration of the interns for each faculty members are given in the following table. The details of faculty members of the department including their respective areas of interests are available in the department website (link it to https://www.iitg.ernet.in/maths/people/faculty.php).

    4.  Application must be forwarded by the Head of the Department/Institute of his/her present educational institute through the Forwarding Letter. A scanned copy of the signed Forwarding Letter must be uploaded in a single PDF file during online application. Make sure that the maximum size of the PDF file is less than 150KB.

    5.      The applicant must provide the email id of a referee who will receive an auto-generated email requesting recommendation, after the  submission of the online application form. The referee must be a teacher of his/her present institute who is familiar with his/her academic performance.


    Other Information about the Internship:

    1.      Actual duration of internship may vary from a minimum of 4 weeks to a maximum of 8 weeks.

    2.      The Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati may provide financial assistance through the Outreach Education Office, IIT Guwahati only for the undergraduate students from colleges of Assam. There will be maximum of ten such scholarships. The interns will be given a financial assistance as in the following:

       Sleeper class train fare (from station to station) / bus fare at government rate (for places not connected by train).

       Rs. 1,000/- per week (7 days) as stipend to provide partial financial support for a maximum period of 4 weeks.

                Eligible and interested candidates are requested to fill up the relevant point in the online   application form.

    3.      The Department of Mathematics, IIT Guwahati will not provide any financial assistance to other interns; however, interns can utilize any fellowship (e.g., Summer Research Fellowship of Joint Science Academies (IAS/INSA/NASI)) available to them.

    4.      The selected candidates will be provided access to the computer lab with internet facility. The attendance record of the selected candidates during the period will be maintained.

    5.      The Submission of an application does not guarantee selection.

    6.      Applying for financial assistance does not ensure the grant of the financial assistance.

    7.      The Department of Mathematics will assign a mentor for the internship depending on the convenience and availability of the faculty members during the said period. Consequently, your choice for a specific mentor does not necessarily guarantee that you, if selected, will be mentored by him/her.

    8.      On request, hostel accommodation can be arranged for which student bears all expenses.

    9.      Selected applicants will receive an e-email. The process of acceptance will be informed through that e-mail.
