IIT Guwahati Hosts Annual AI Confluence for Online B.Sc. Data Science and AI Students
GUWAHATI, 6th January 2026: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati hosted the Annual AI conference with 400 students enrolled in its online B.Sc. (Hons) Degree program in Data Science and AI. The programme is offered by the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at IIT Guwahati.
Drawn from across India, the two-day event created a shared physical space for a cohort that typically learns online, enabling students to interact with faculty, meet peers, and experience the campus environment together.
The cohort included early-career professionals, students who have completed Class XII, and learners from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds. For many participants, AI Confluence was an opportunity to meet classmates and instructors in person, reinforcing a sense of connection to the institute beyond the digital classroom.
AI Confluence is a platform that complements online learning with direct engagement and community-building. Over two days, students attended invited talks, participated in discussions, presented work, and took part in collaborative and cultural activities alongside peers and faculty.
Underscoring the growing relevance of Data Science, Prof. Devendra Jalohal, Director, IIT Guwahati, said, “Data science encompasses every domain of modern-day business. IIT Guwahati recognises the value of creating opportunities for online learners to meet, collaborate, and feel connected to the institution. AI Confluence reflects the institute’s continued efforts to complement online education with shared experiences that foster community, collaboration, and personal growth.”
The event included invited lectures focused on data-driven approaches in the life sciences, software engineering, privacy and security in large-scale AI systems, and discussions on skills that remain essential in an increasingly automated world. These sessions reflected the programme’s emphasis on both technical depth and broader contextual understanding.
Alongside academic sessions, students engaged in poster presentations, AI film-making challenges, inventathon activities, and panel discussions on business and entrepreneurship. Cultural programmes and student-led showcases provided additional opportunities for interaction, teamwork, and informal learning—elements that contribute to a fuller educational experience.
Speaking during the event, Prof. Ratnajit Bhattacharya, Head, Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, IIT Guwahati, said, “The demand for both data science and artificial intelligence is growing. We have come to a paradigm where decision-making by analysing data is becoming very important.”
The online B.Sc. (Hons) Degree program in Data Science and AI at IIT Guwahati is designed to support students and working professionals whose geographies, career paths, or personal circumstances may not allow for full-time, on-campus education.
Highlighting the program, Prof. Hemant B. Kaushik, Dean of Online Education & Skilling (OES), IIT Guwahati, said, “High-quality technical upskilling should be accessible for early-career professionals and ambitious young students. The online B.Sc. (Hons) programme in DS & AI at IIT Guwahati focuses on widening access while ensuring that academic standards, faculty engagement, and assessment rigour remain uncompromised.”
Students in the programme may choose their pace of study and benefit from a flexible academic structure with multiple entry and exit options, enabling them to balance learning with professional and personal commitments. Teaching is conducted fully online by IIT Guwahati faculty through recorded lectures, live sessions, and discussion hours.
As the footprint of IIT Guwahati’s online B.Sc. (Hons) in DS & AI programme continues to grow, the Institute remains committed to investing in thoughtful models of technical education that combine academic rigour with accessibility, flexibility, and meaningful engagement.
