Objectives:

The main objectives of the course are,
        - Exposing the participants to the basics of green and sustainable material forming and joining technologies
        - Realizing the relationship between conventional processes and the green forming and joining processes
        - Providing case studies for sustainable forming and joining processes
        - Providing exercises for converting conventional processes to green processes
        - Highlighting the importance of awareness on sustainable and green engineering through education

Introduction to green manufacturing processes: Conventional manufacturing processes, Need for green technologies, Advantages Vs disadvantages, Green material forming and joining techniques

Lecture 2: June 6, 2016; 11.30 AM to 12.30 Noon

Bulk forming 1: Basics of extrusion and drawing, Efficient extrusion and drawing through green concepts, Computations Vs actual trials, Emphasis on Cold and Warm forming to reduce the energy input and heating of billets and resulting pollution, Efficient methods of heating of billets for hot forming

 

 

Lecture 3: June 7, 2016; 10 to 11 AM

Bulk forming 2: Basics of wire drawing and rolling, Efficient processing through green concepts, Computations Vs actual trials, Research contributions in the green bulk forming aspect

Lecture 4: June 7, 2016; 11.30 AM to 12.30 Noon

Sheet forming: Basics of sheet forming operations, Efficient processing through green concepts, Computations Vs actual trials, Research contributions in the aspect

 

 

Lecture 5: June 8, 2016; 10 to 11 AM

Joining: Conventional and green joining technologies (FSW, SPR, EM welding, Adhesive bonding), Methods of joining sheet to sheet, tube to tube, tube to sheet etc., Computational aspects of analyses and green concepts

Lecture 6: June 8, 2016; 11.30 AM to 12.30 Noon

Defects in material forming and joining, Minimizing such defects towards green, material and tool selection

 

 

Lecture 7: June 9, 2016; 10 to 11 AM

Materials design for green and sustainability: Green and sustainability in raw material making industries, selection of material for efficient product making, materials development for green, materials Vs processes

Lecture 8: June 9, 2016; 11.30 AM to 12.30 Noon

Die design for green and sustainability: Die design concepts, materials for dies, effect of die materials on forming and joining, computations in die design

 

 

Lecture 9: June 10, 2016; 10 to 11 AM

Green lubrication: Conventional Vs Green lubricants, Various lubricants towards green, Use of environmentally friendly lubricants specifically for hot and cold forming, Bio-lubricants, Vegetables oils

Lecture 10: June 10, 2016; 11.30 AM to 12.30 Noon

Case studies/exercises for converting conventional to green manufacturing processes, Optimizing Total Life Cycle costs: Manufacturing costs, societal costs, recycling cost, waste disposal cost etc.

 

 

Lecture 11: June 11, 2016; 10 to 11 AM

Rapid prototyping and Micro/nano fabrication technologies: Liquid based, Solid based, Powder based RP methods, 3D printing, Applications of micro/nano fabrication

Lecture 12: June 11, 2016; 11.30 AM to 12.30 Noon

Green and sustainable engineering and education: Creating awareness about green and sustainability issues, UG and PG syllabus modification for including green and sustainability concepts
