Advancements & Applications of Ultrafast Laser Pulses

The advancement of ultrashort-pulse lasers have led to several applications in various areas ranging from medical science to engineering. It already found a handful of commercial applications in which extreme precision is required. In recent years, femtosecond lasers have been used to remove defects as small as about 10 nm on photolithographic masks for fabrication of state-of-the-art integrated electronic circuits. The technology involving the femtosecond lasers is rapidly gworing amd also finding applications in fields such as writing three-dimensional waveguides in silica, fabricating microfluidic devices, and performing surgery inside living cells without punching holes through the cell membrane. In optics, an ultrashort pulse of light have opened new research and technological avenues. Since these pulses have broadband optical spectrum and therefore, can be useful for varity of optical phenomenon. The field of terahertz photonics is one of the fast growing field in research nowadays and ultrashort pulses have played a bigger role in generating intense, broadband terahertz pulses.  In medical science, the micro texturization of implant surfaces using fs laser pulses has been experimented for the enhancement of the bone formation around zirconia dental implants. Obviously, the applications of  femtosecond pulse are numerous and increasing. Our workshop will address different technological developments and advancemnts in the following and related areas involving ultrashort laser pulses:

  • Non-linear Optics and Ultra-short pulses
  • Thin film deposition and material Processing
  • Second and higher harmonic generation, and applications
  • Optical communication (Ultrashort pulses) Filtering and Pulse Shaping
  • Ultra short laser pulses for confocal microscopy.
  • Terahertz plasmonics and metamaterials.


The course is open to faculty members of TEQIP listed Institutions / engineering colleges and government funded NE State Technical Institutions. Seats that remain unfilled will be open to other institutions. No course fee is charged. Candidates from TEQIP institutions will be reimbursed TA & DA from their respective institutions.

Selection Criteria

Total Number of seats - 30. Selection will be based on First cum first served basis from priority (i) TEQIP mapped Institution (ii) CFTI (iii) State Govt Institutions (iv) Other institutions.

Financial assistance from IIT Guwahati

For Participants from TEQIP Mapped Institutions

TA and DA will be reimbursed from their respective institutions as per rules.

For Participants from Central/State Govt. Funded Technical Institutions in North Eastern States

Limited number of participants from Central or State Government funded technical institutions located in the North Eastern States of India may be eligible and considered by IIT Guwahati for reimbursement of

-to and fro railway fare via shortest route in 3AC

-to and fro fare in Government approved buses.

Proof of journey and/or tickets is/are to be attached with the reimbursement claims. Please note that tatkal reservation charges will not be reimbursed. No taxi fare will be reimbursed.

For Participants from Other Institutions:

-No TA and DA will be reimbursed by IIT Guwahati
