Course Materials

Objectives

Networking and Distributed Computing are essential in modern computing and communications systems. Examples are on one hand large-scale networks such as the Internet, and on other hand multiprocessors such as your new multi-core laptops. Distributed system and networking are of great interest to the research community due to its significant promised impact on the society in the last couple of decades.

The main purpose of this course is to enlighten people about recent trends in networks and distributed computing from the principles of distributed computing and to emphasize the fundamental issues on the design of distributed systems and networks.

 

Topics to be Covered

The short term course aims to include the following topics:

·         Recent trends in networks

·         Queueing models and queueing networks

·         Localization and coverage problems in wireless sensor networks

·         Distributed algorithms

·         Scheduling in distributed systems

·         Fault-tolerance in distributed computing systems

·         Distributed algorithms for swarm robots 

 

Course Material

Short notes, slides and reference materials will be provided on CD/printed form.

 

Eligibility

The course is open mainly to teachers of Engineering colleges and polytechnics approved by AICTE. No course fee is charged for participants sponsored by AICTE approved institutions provided the original sponsorship certificate is attached with the application or given before the course. However, Rs. 1000/- caution-money has to be sent by the selected participants, which will be returned only when participant joins the course. Eligible participants from other governments departments and industries have to pay a course fee of Rs. 2500/ and Rs.5000/- respectively per person after being selected and they must meet the T.A. and D.A. from their own organization. The payment is to be made by demand draft (DD) drawn on any nationalised bank in favour of QIP, IIT Guwahati, payable at Guwahati.

 

Financial Assistantship

A limited number of participants from AICTE recognized institutions will be eligible for AC III tier railway fare∗ via the shortest route from the place of work and free lodging and boarding during the course period. Candidates attending the course in full only will be eligible for TA and DA. For all other participants no TA/DA will be paid.

* Please note that Tatkal reservation charges will not be reimbursed.

 

Boarding and Lodging

Boarding and lodging facilities will be provided for the selected candidates from AICTE approved institutions in the student’s hostels of the institute. However, lodging can be arranged in the Institute Guest House (twin-sharing basis) on payment of rent subject to availability.

Double bedded AC/Non-AC Room
Single occupancy: Rs. 450/- per day
Double occupancy: Rs. 550/- per day

Please note that it is not possible to arrange accommodation for accompanying person(s). The accommodation is reserved strictly from noon of February 9 till the noon of February 15, 2015. Extension beyond this period is not possible.

Institute buses are available at frequent intervals from the city to IITG campus and also within the campus. In city the institute buses start from the LNB road, near RBI Police point (about 0.5 km from Guwahati Railway Station).
