All centrally funded Technical Institutes including IITs are required to conduct internal departmental reviews which is subsequently assessed by an external panel every five years.
The Public Relations, Branding and Ranking Office was created at IIT Guwahati as per the decision of the IIT Council in order to initiate an internal process of accreditation for the IITs and to get India into the Washington Accord and agreement among technologically advanced countries for the endorsement of the Engineering Education System.
Accreditation of other Institute is done by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) but IITs were given the responsibility to organise their own peer review process.
