Experiments Performed:

This lab is for both undergraduates and graduate students. Some of the experiments which are performed by under-graduate students are performance studies of both C.I. and S.I. engines, etc. Moreover studeis on the glorific values, exhaust gas characteristics, extensive studies of bio-diesel with both engines are done by post-graduate students in their respective project works. And besides the laboratory classes, the determination of calorific value for different fuels are done by some consultancy in this laboratory.

In IC Engine laboratory we have following set-ups for carrying out experiments and research works:

Engine Test Rig (Computerised)

Description: 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, water cooled, Bajaj Tempo, model D-301, rated power 34 Kw at 3800 rpm, bore 78mm, stroke 94mm, compression ratio 19.8:1
Dynamometer Hydraulic: Make Saj, Pune, with set of weights, Dynamometer eddy current: Make Saj, Pune, model AG-80 with loading device.
Airbox with orificemeter and manometer
Fuel tank: 20 lit capacity with metering column,
Rotameter for water flow measurement
Temperature indicator: PT-100 type temperature sensors. (3 points)
Overall size 2m L x 2.5m W x 1.5m H. Weight 300kg approx.
Uses:
The setup consists engine connected to hydraulic/eddy current type dynamometer. It is provided with necessary equipment and instruments for combustion pressure and crank angle measurements.
These signals are interfaced with computer through engine indicator for pθ, PV plots and engine indicated power, Provision is also made for interfacing air flow, fuel flow, temperatures and load measurements with computer.
The setup enables study of diesel engine for indicated power, brake power, thermal efficiency, volumetric efficiency, fuel consumption, air fuel ratio, heat balance etc. and to obtain the pθ diagram, PV plot and performance curves at various operating points.
