MA in Development Studies
The M. A. Programme in Development Studies is a multi-disciplinary programme and was initiated in the year 2009. The programme is designed
to provide an understanding of various perspectives of development issues, through rigorous course works and guided research. The perspectives
are drawn from different disciplines of the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The programme has a maximum of 48 seats. The admission is conducted through an entrance test for which the
announcement is made around the month of February, March. We follow reservation norms as per government rules. The test is conducted in
the month of June. A part of the test consists of multiple choice questions. The other part is descriptive. The areas which are covered
are current affairs, contemporary economy, politics, society, as well as logical reasoning. Currently the only centre for taking the test is IIT Guwahati.
The results are announced and the list of selected candidates is published in the departmental webpage in due course of time. Admission normally starts
towards the end of July, after which the classes start. Information about eligibility and other relevant details are announced on the institute
website at the time of advertisement of admission.

Institute Silver Medal
- The topper of the MA(DS) examination at the end of first year will be eligible for "Jadav Prasad Chaliha Award for Academic Excellence".
The value of the Award is INR 20000.
- The topper of the MA(DS) programme, amongst those students with yearly family income lower than Rs 4.5 lakh, will be awarded ‘Jadav Prasad Chaliha Merit-cum-Means Award’, with a cash award of Rs 20,000/- each.
- In case the same student qualifies for both ‘Jadav Prasad Chaliha Award for Academic Excellence’ and ‘Jadav Prasad Chaliha Merit-cum-Means Award’, then the latter will be given to the student with the second highest CPI in that category.
The Institute Silver Medals, for Master of Arts (MA) programmes of the Institute will be awarded to each year to the student who ranks first,
obtaining the highest Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) among all graduating
students in his/her discipline in that year. In case of a tie in the CPI, the medal will be awarded to the student who has earned the highest number of credits with 10 grade points.
