Short Term Course on Research Methods and Computer Applications in Humanities and Social Sciences
A Short Term Course on “Research Methods and Computer Applications in Humanities and Social Sciences” was organised by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences during 12-23 March 2012. Twenty-nine PhD students from various universities and research institutes participated in the Short Term Course. The objective of the Short Term Course (STC) was to introduce epistemological issues in social research, basic elements of empirical research and various techniques of data collection, computer applications, statistical analysis and interpretation data. Apart from introducing the participants to various research methods, different computer applications, such as SPSS and STATA were also taught. The methodology used includes lecture sessions, interactive discussions and presentations, demonstrations through computer applications and exercises and field study. The Short Term Course was sponsored by the Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi. Dr. Mrinal Kanti Dutta was the Director of the course.
Workshop on Tone and Intonation 2012 (WTI 2012)
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences organized a two-day interdisciplinary workshop on tone and intonation, “Workshop on Tone and Intonation: Theory, Typology and Computation from 26-27 January, 2012, with special reference to the languages of North-East India. The workshop featured talks by speech scientists from both linguistics and electrical engineering background. The participants discussed tones and intonation in some of the lesser studied languages of the Indian subcontinent such as, Dzongkha, Riang, Tedim-chin, Tenyidie etc. There was a large number of presenters from the North East and beyond. Promiment among the speakers are Prof. K. G. Vijayakrishnan from EFLU, Hyderabad, Dr. Kalika Bali from Microsoft Research Labs, Prof. Shyamal Das, from Tripura University etc. Some of the recent progresses made in prosodically guided speech synthesis in languages like Bangla and Mizo, were also reported in the workshop. The workshop was sponsored by LDCIL, Mysore and the North Eastern Council. The convenor of the workshop was Dr. Shakuntala Mahanta and the co-convenors were Dr. Priyankoo Sarmah and Prof. S.R.M Prasanna.
Students of M.A. Development Study organized a Farewell Party to their seniors on 23rd March 2011. A short but very colourful cultural function was also organized by the students to mark the occasion.
Short Term Course:
An ICSSR sponsored short term course is organized in the department w.e.f. 12th March 2011 till 18th March 2011. More than 30 participants, mostly research scholars from various departments of the institute like department of Design,Department of HSS and others and from some other institutes of the country, have participated in the programme. Dr Sawmya Ray is the convener of this short term course on Research Methodology.
International Women’s Day was Celebrated specially by the students of MA Development Study and faculty in the Department in collaboration with the Committee for Working Women IITG ,on 8th March 2011.Besides panel discussion on women’s health ,education and other issues students arranged art and painting exhibition and poetry recitations etc. on this occasion and the Wall Magazine of the department was specially launched by the students. The students of the Department and the members of the Women Cell took initiative to stage special plays related to women’s issues .
International Conference on ‘Climate Change and Water: Assessing vulnerability, impact, and adaptation in the Eastern Himalayas’’ from January 3-5, 2011 was organised by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati. The conference was supported by North East Council (NEC), Oil India Limited (OIL) and Indian Council for Social Science Research (ICSSR). It was co-ordinated by Dr.Anamika Barua & Prof. A.N.S. Ahmed.
A Short Term Course on “Science, Technology and Society” was organised by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences under the auspices of the Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) of IIT Guwahati during December 13-17, 2010. Dr. Sambit Mallick and Dr. Liza Das were the coordinators of the course.
ICPR sponsored World Philosophy Day was celebrated on 30th November 2010.Prof. Ashok Vohra,Former HOD, Dept. of Philosophy,DU, gave the keynote lecture on “Lifestyle,Value & Meaning of Life” . The Department also felicitated a renowned philosopher and a dedicated philosophy teacher who taught more than a decade in Cotton college,Guwahati Dr.Jyotshna Bhatacharjee for her pioneer work in popularizing philosophy among young students and researchers of the region. Dr.Bhattacharya addressed the students and the faculty and enthralled them with her scholarly talk.
The Dept. of HSS Organised an Interactive Session with the Visiting Scholars & Diginitaries from Bangladesh on 23rd November 2010 with the dignitaries and some distinguished academicians, media persons, distinguished citizens , students and other invited guests from Guwahati . The distinguished guests from Bangladesh who took part in the panel discussion are: Professor Sirajul Islam, a retired Professor of History, Dhaka University and author of number of books on Bangladesh, Ambassador AKM Farook started his service career as a Lecturer in Faujdarhat Cadet College in 1963 and then joined Pakistan Foreign Service in 1966, Professor Shaheen M. Kabir is a Professor of English, Jahangirnagar University, Dr. Kalpana Halder is Librarian of Dhaka University, Her publications relate to Sanskrit and Bengali language and literature and manuscript reading, Shahida Begum, Assistant Attorney General of Bangladesh, Ali Imam, is a well known and highly respected television journalist.Besuides the panelists a good number of IITG faculty and students participated in the programme.
A workshop on “Children and Women’s Rights and Issues” was organised by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences in collaboration with UNICEF on May 6, 2010. Dr. Sambit Mallick was the convenor of the workshop.
A Short Term Course on ‘Strengthening of Democracy at the Grassroots in India‘ was organised by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences during March 13-14, 2010. Dr. Sambit Mallick was the coordinator of the Short Term Course.
11th Annual Conference of the North Eastern Economic Association was organised by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences during December 18-19, 2009. Dr. Mrinal K. Dutta was the organising secretary of the conference.
Winter School in Philosophy was organized by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, in collaboration with Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla, during December 30 2008 – January 10 2009. Prof. Archana Barua and Dr.V.Prabhu were the coordinators of the school.
XVIII Annual Conference of National Academy of Psychology was organized by the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, during December 14-17, 2008. Dr. Nachiketa Tripathi was the convener of the conference.
Workshop on “Ceramics and Lithics Technology in Archaeology” was organised by the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences, during November 10-14, 2008. The workshop was sponsored by Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR), New Delhi and it was coordinated by Dr. Sukanya Sharma.
Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) on ‘Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Development: A Human Interface ‘, November 12-16, 2007 was organized by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati. It was co-ordinated by Dr Deepthi Shanker.
International Conference on ‘Northeast India and Its transnational neighbourhood’ from January 17th – 18th, 2008 was organised by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati. It was co-ordinated by Prof. Sanjib Baruah and Dr.Sukanya Sharma.
National Symposium on ‘Industry and Ecology: Perspectives on Development in Northeast India’ on October 26, 2007 was organised by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati. It was co-ordinated by Dr.Liza Das and Dr. Sukanya Sharma.
National Seminar on `Peace in Dialogue: Reflection on North-East India’, from Feb 1 to Feb 2, 2007 was organized by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), Shillong. It was co-ordinated by Dr. Sujata Dutta Hazarika.
Workshop on `Internal Displacement: Issues in North East India’, from April 16 to April 17, 2006 was organised by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati. It was co-ordinated by Dr Sujata Dutta Hazarika and funded by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, Kolkota.
Quality Improvement Programme (QIP) on `Integrating Humanities and Social Sciences in Technical Education’, from November 7 to November 11, 2005 was organised by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati. It was co-ordinated by Dr Rohini Mokashi Punekar and Dr Venkataraman Prabhu.
Summer Course on `Theory After Derrida’ from June 20 to July 16, 2005 was jointly organized by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati and the Forum on Contemporary Theory, Baroda. It was co-ordinated by Dr Rohini Mokashi Punekar.
Workshop on `Problems of Credit Delivery and Absorption in the Rural Economy of North East India’, from December 3-4, 2004 was jointly organised by Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati & North Eastern Economic Association. It was co-ordinated by Dr Saundarya Borbora and Dr Mrinal Kanti Dutta.
