The Institute can be reached by road, rail or air. Since it is
located on the outskirts of the city of Guwahati, it is well connected
to other parts of the country by road, rail or air.
Guwahati is well connected by air, rail and road with the rest
of the country. There are direct air services from/to New Delhi
and Kolkata with connectivity to all major cities in the country
and direct train services from/to all major cities in the country
and direct train services from/to all the metropolis and other major
cities. Indian Airlines, Air Sahara, Jet Airways, Deccan Air and
SpiceJet operate regular flights to and from Guwahati.
It is around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 35 min
drive from the airport. To reach the institute from the city, there
is the institute bus service that runs regularly to and from the
city.
There are direct flights from Delhi and Kolkata
offered by Indian Airlines, Air Sahara and Jet Airways. Connecting
flights via Kolkata are available and the charge is around Rs. 2500.
Getting to the IITG from the airport (which may take around 40 minutes)
will cost another Rs. 300. Taxis are available for transport within
the city also but are without meters and fares have to be negotiated
and the same applies to autorickshaws. There is also an extensive
network of city bus service.
For commuting from the station to the north Guwahati
campus, tata sumos and auto-rickshaws are available. IIT Guwahati
has also its own transportation facilities to fly to and fro from
North Guwahati campus to the city. Normal charge is Rs. 5 per person.
Privately hired auto rickshaws will charge about Rs. 200 from railway
station to IIT Guwahati.
