Admissions Procedure

Bachelors in Design (B. Des) Procedure
Students applying for the undergraduate (B.Des) course in Design should qualify the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the IIT's as part of their central admission procedure. They are further shortlisted through an aptitude test for design. You can view the course structure for B.Des here.

More information about the JEE and important dates, please visit the JEE page on the IIT Guwahati main site.

Information regarding the Common Aptitude test:

Design discipline takes students with a keen eye over colour sensitiveness, structures, perception, aesthetics, innovation and an aptitude towards the discipline. This test is conducted on the last day of the counseling sessions at all the centres.

Syllabus for Aptitude test:

Basic awareness of Design and Architecture; Construction of lines, curves, planes and volumes - freehand and geometric; Transformation of forms both 2D and 3D - union, subtraction, rotation, development of surfaces and volumes; Generation of plan, elevations and 3D views of objects; Simple design projects in 2D and 3D; Colour sense and concepts - shading and colouring; Perception of light, shade and shadow; Quizzes to understand the aesthetic sensitivity/appreciation, composition, space relationship, visual logic, observation of object details, proportion and scale; Drawing from memory of any familiar object or given scenario; Pictogram analyses, sense of assimilation, synthesis of discrete components for design; Test of imagination and expression; Lettering skill - freehand and geometric.

Masters in Design (M.Des) procedure:

Masters in Design (M.Des) is one of the unique program offered by Department of Design (DoD), IIT Guwahati. Student applying for post graduate (M.Des) program should qualify the Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED) conducted by IITs as a part of their central admission procedure. They are further shortlisted through apptitude test and further on through a personal interview session. You can view the course structure for M.Des here.

PhD program details:

In its quest for syncretism, the Ph.D program will emphasize investigative work in fundamental Design which is not only interdisciplinary but also intradisciplinary. The range of disciplines of integrative interest include, but are not necessarily limited to, Usability Engineering, Interaction Design, Design Semantics, Experiential Design, Environment Design, Human –Computer Interaction Design, Ergonomics, Design Management and Product Design Engineering. Since the program is rooted in User Centered Design, specific areas in pure engineering design such as Machine Design, Software Design, VLSI design, etc are not the focus of research. However all ‘Use’ and User connected design issues in pure engineering areas, regardless of the branch, fall within the ambit of the research program.

Qualification requirements for the PhD program at DoD

Categories under which admission are being offered at IITG:

  • B.Des/B.Arch/B.Tech (Comp Sc, Mechanical) from IITs with minimum 8 CPI will be considered for direct admission without GATE/CEED score requirements, as regular full time candidates.
  • M.Des / M.Archs/ MS (Interaction Design/HCI or related areas), or equivalent Masters degree in the area of Design such as M.F.A (Digital/Computer graphics) with a minimum CPI of 6.5
  • M.Tech / MS /ME (Product Design Engineering /Industrial Design Engineering related areas)
  • M.Sc (Psychology, Physiology, Ergonomics)
  • MBA (with specialisation in Design Management from a recogonised institution)
  • NID Post-Graduate Diploma Programme in Design (PGDPD) with a basic first class Engineering/BFAdegree.

Valid CEED/GATE scores are necessary for all candidates except sponsored and self financed candidates. QIP candidates are governed by the QIP rules.

geometric.

Scholarships:

All regular candidates with GATE/CEED score are entitled to scholarship and will have to perform teaching /lab assistance duties in addition to pursuing their resear.

Admission procedure:

Candidates need to apply against admission announcement that are advertised every six months in national newspapers and on the IITG web site. Interested applicants can contact Faculty members at DoD-IITG for an informal exchange for the purposes of exploring potential topics to suit their interests, anytime of the year.

The admission processes will consists of a seminar /presentation of a topic of the candidate’s choice but related to Design. The seminar could also be in the form of a proposal for intended research consisting of problem statement, hypothesis, possible methodology and bibliography. Candidates are also encouraged to present portfolios/projects/work experience that may have a bearing on their research interest. This presentation will be followed by a formal interview/test covering fundamental and advanced topics in Design related issues.

Admitted scholars have to complete a prescribed course of study (4 to 6 Courses) in the first year followed by a comprehensive examination for registration. Candidates will have to submit a thesis that not only demonstrates designing ability but also should clearly break new grounds in the disciplinary knowledge base of Design, based on investigative and experimental work. The duration of the PhD program can range between 3 to 5 years.
