1. Centre for Excellence in Research and Development of Nanoelectronic Theranostic Devices - DeitY (2014 – 2019) – as Principal Investigator

Micro/nano electronic devices have contributed significantly in the improvement of the quality of life across different societies. It can be said that the progress of a nation is intimately related to the development of infrastructure for pursuing new discoveries in these fields. The North-Eastern (NE) region of India needs appropriate infrastructure development and its maintenance for the pursuit of advanced research in various fields related to micronscale and nanoscale electronics. Furthermore, diseases, like, esophageal cancers, heart failure, pathogenic and parasitic infections are prevalent in this region which needs special attention, as far as their early diagnosis and cure are concerned. In the recent years, NE region have been identified with biodiversity hotspots require early detection of plant pathogens and genetic markers for potentially high yielding plants. This could potentially be addressed using modern electronic devices. In this direction, Centre for Nanotechnology of IIT Guwahati wishes to take a lead for the scientific and technological developments in the NE region of the country. Thus, the objectives of this proposal are rather multi-purpose in nature with far reaching consequences in the long run.

Firstly, the aim is to develop interdisciplinary experimental facilities in the NE region for the fabrication and characterization of micro/nano electronic devices. Secondly, a competent group of academic leaders is to be formed who, along with students and research staff members, would utilize the facility and develop efficient chemical, biological, and environmental sensors, transistors, and MEMS/NEMS devices. In particular, these devices would be targeted to serve therapeutic and diagnostic applications, pertaining to the burgeoning healthcare issues in the NE region. Thirdly, once the infrastructure is in place and substantial technology development is in progress, efforts would be made to bring in industry from across the country to collaborate with IIT Guwahati in order to improve upon and convert these devices to marketable products. Finally, an important aim of the project proposal is to help the other academic institutes in the region and in the country to join the initiative so that they too can be part of this development. The defined focus to develop nanoelectronic sensors for disease diagnosis in this proposal is important for the country and that would help to create a center/platform for excellence in fundamental and translational research in the NE region.

Thus the major long-term objectives are as follows:
  • Develop the state-of-art fabrication and characterization facilities at the Centre for Nanotechnology, IIT Guwahati, which will be the first of its kind in the NE region.
  • Combine the existing expertise from physical, chemical, biological, and engineering sciences in order to design and develop futuristic micro/nano devices such as,
    • Nano-bio and Bio-nano particle based sensors involving field effect transistors.
    • Surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices as bio-nano particle based sensors.
    • MEMS/NEMS devices for easy detection of pollutants, blood culture, viruses, and bacteria.
    • Semiconductor nanowire field-effect-transistor based advanced bio-sensors for biomedical diagnosis.
  • Explore alternative pathways to develop efficient and cost-effective tools that can address the technological needs and further, employ the knowledge base to push the limits of nanofabrication of micro/nano devices.
  • Involve the academia and industry in NE and other parts of the country to exploit these facilities for the development of futuristic devices.
  • Collaborate with the experts inside/outside country as and when necessary to develop and enhance specific expertise.
  • Arrange yearly workshops to spread awareness about the program and possible utility of the facility in the region.

A successful implementation of the objectives will contribute heavily towards improving the quality of local scientific and technological assets by developing cutting edge indigenous devices, generating quality employment, and trained manpower together with speeding awareness in this developing part of the country.
