Mihir Kumar Purkait

Dr. Mihir Kumar Purkait is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahatiat (IITG). He became Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) in 2017 and Fellow of Institute of Engineers (FIE) in 2016. Prior to joining as faculty in IITG in 2004 he has received his PhD and M. Tech in Chemical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IITKGP) after completing his B. Tech in Chemical Engineering from University of Calcutta. He has received several awards like; Dr. A.V. Rama Rao Foundation’s Best PhD Thesis in India and Research Award in Chemical Engineering from IIChE (2007), BOYSCAST Fellow award (2009-10) from the DST, Young Engineers Award in the field of Chemical Engineering from the Institute of engineers (India, 2009), young scientist medal award from the Indian National Science Academy (INSA, 2009). Prof. Mihir Kumar Purkait is energetically involved in frontier areas of Chemical Engineering with his major research interest in the field of membrane based separation processes. His contribution in this field covers both fundamental and applied research.

Fundamental research:
Prof. Purkait has made outstanding contribution in the field of smart membrane fabrication for chemical, biochemical and environmental separation, purification and pre-concentration. He has developed the fundamental concept, mechanism and understanding of smart or intelligent membranes with environmental stimuli-responsive functions. The development ranges from flat membranes to tubular membranes with various response properties, such as thermo-response, pH-response, and dual-/multi-stimuli-response. He has also developed antibacterial and antifouling membranes. He has developed a state of art laboratory dealing with design concepts, fabrication strategies and methods, controlled microstructures and surface modifications of smart membranes for wide range of separation applications.
Apart from membrane filtration, Prof. Purkait contributed significantly on adsorption, electrocoagulation, nanotechnology, bioenergy, treatment of industrial effluents and contaminated drinking water, catalyst development and electrochemical reduction of CO2 to various pure products and liquid fuels.

Applied research: 
Prof. Purkait has developed membrane (both ceramic and polymeric) based greener technology for various applications viz. i) separation of value added products having pharmaceutical and medicinal importance from numerous plants, ii) clarifications of fruit and vegetable juices, iii) pure carbon from coal for steel industries, iv) treatment of industrial effluents from refinery, textile, and tannery and v) prototype treatment units for Iron, Arsenic and Fluoride contaminated drinking water. 

He has more than 15 years of experience in academics and research and published more than 140 papers in different reputed international journals. He has submitted 7 patents and involved with more than 14 sponsored projects from various funding agencies. Dr. Purkait has guided 12 numbers of PhD students and 7 are yet to get their PhD degree.
