Overview :

The continued economic prosperity that has been felt by half the world has only been possible through the use of energy resources. Since the start of the industrial revolution and through the 20th and 21st centurieswe have largely relied on fossil fuels to meet our increasing energy demand. Despite attempts to decouple economic and energy growth this demand looks set to continue. However, this economic growth has come at a cost. Pollution and climate change are caused by the burning of fossil fuels. Annually around 3.5 million people die prematurely because of air pollution. Climate change could affect 100s of millions of people. Since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit efforts have been made to cut back on emissions. However, it was the 2015 Paris Agreement has finally led to a global consensus for deep greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductionto limit global mean temperature rise to 20C. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change 5th Assessment Report highlighted the need for all key mitigation options to be usedin this battle, namely,energy efficiency, renewables, carbon capture and storage.

What is now needed to meet the targets to mitigate further GHG emissions and adapt to change is an energy revolution.In order to understand how this can be carried out and appreciation of how the global energy system has developed is required. This will look at historic data to show energy use and economic development patterns. The types of energy resources, fossil fuels and nuclear will be discussed with consideration given to environmental issues. Mitigation of these pollution matters will be explored by reviewing different renewable energy technologies, improvements in the efficiency of the transmission and use of electricity, storage of electricity and carbon capture. Future scenarios will also be discussed that include storage and smart grid systems.

Internationally acclaimed academics, researchers and practitioners with proven knowledge, experi-ence, and demonstrable ability in teaching, consultancy, research, and training in the field of Energy Systems will deliver lectures and discuss cases in the course. The course will be planned and offered as per the norms set by IIT Guwahati.

Objectives:

The primary objectives of the course are as follows:
    i) Introduce participants global energy systems and economic activity

    ii) Examine traditional electricity generation systems, architecture, efficiencies, costs and emissions

    iii) Identify solutions to mitigate climate change through renewable energy, efficiency , carbon cap-ture and storage

    iv) To discuss future electricity supply scenarios.

BTech/MSc/MTech/PhD students or faculty from academic institution interested in learning of technology related to electricity systems.
Executives, engineers and researchers from in all field of engineering and science including R & D labs and government organizations.

Accommodation


Accomodation based on nominal charges (per day) will be avilable to all participants at IIT Guwahati campus. Student participants will be accomodated in boys / girls hostels. Participants from academic, R & D institutes and industry will be accomodated in IITG guest house on twin sharing basis. Partipants need to borne their own accomodation and fooding expenses. Brief Information about the Faculties


Dr. Richard Blanchard

Dr. Richard Blanchard is a Lecturer in Renewable Energy from Loughborough University's(UK) Centre for Renewable Energy Systems Technology. Dr Blanchard's research focuses on energy sys-tems, bioenergy, energy for development and renewable energy education. Dr Blanchard has con-siderable international experience working in Europe,Asia, Africa and S. America. Projects include developing rural hybrid energy systems in India, biogas production from market waste in India, small photovoltaic electrical grids in Kenya, collaborating with China on developing micro-grids, rural energy development in Malawi and gasification of organic waste in Ecuador. He has around 100 publications to date. He helped develop a distance learning Master of Science in Renewable Energy Systems Technology that has proved to be a great success.

He won the Baker Medal (2011) for work on microgeneration technology and the 2015 European Conference on E-Learning Excellence Award for work on a remote access photovoltaic laboratory.

Dr. Pinakeswar Mahanta

Prof. P. Mahanta is a faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati. His major area of research is on thermodynamics, heat transfer and renewable energy. He has established an international platform for research in the area of bio-energy with University of Nottingham, University of Birmingham, and Loughborough University, UK. He has established collaboration in the field of clean coal technology with University of Cranfield, UK and UCL, Belguim. He has been involved with national level extension activities like development of course materials for NPTEL web course and have also developed course material for IGNOU. He is involved as an active member of various technical and scientific committees such as Bureau of Indian Standards, Regional Science Society, etc. He received the Indian Distinguishing visiting fellowship by University of Nottingham, UK for the period 10.06.2010 to 10.07.2010. Research through PhD supervisions and sponsored projects resulted in publications of 3 book chapters and 52 papers during last 6 (six) years, out of which 33 were published in reputed peer reviewed international journals and 19 were published in the proceedings of conferences. 1 (One) Indian patent was filed from the research findings and the grant is awaited. He is the principle investigator of the Biogas Development and Training Centre at IITG, functioning since 2006 and sponsored by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, New Delhi, India for popularization of the technology through training, installation and supervision in the north east region of India.
