About The Course

Clean energy technology refers to any process, product or service that reduces negative environmental impacts through significant energy efficiency improvements, sustainable use of resources or environmental protection activities. Clean energy technologies also endure economic growth by enhancing the supply of energy demand and tackling environmental challenges and their impacts due to the use of other conventional sources of energy. This course is aimed at disseminating knowledge on the various aspects of clean energy technology.

Invited speakers and faculty members of IIT Guwahati will deliver lectures on the various topics of this subject.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To enable the learner to understand the clean energy technologies in broadest terms which includes different aspects of clean energy, their importance, advantages compared to conventional energy sources, environmental impacts, economic feasibility, clean energy sources and their socio-economic issues.
  • To enable the learner to device appropriate technology based on the available resources.
  • To provide state of the art course material for effective teaching and learning to the faculty members and research scholars.
  • To provide the insight of pedagogy for effective teaching.
  • To provide exposure to the state of the art lab facilities and hands of experiments on appropriate set-ups.
  • To analyze different challenges in the use of clean energy technologies, effective methods to overcome the challenges and also to focus on different schemes and policies adopted by government of India.

  • Solar energy conversion (photovoltaic, thermal and combination of both).
  • Wind power and its generation of electricity, applications and future scopes.
  • Biomass energy utilization, conversion technologies (Thermochemical, Bio-chemical).
  • Biofuels (biodiesels, biogas, producer gas, and natural gas), their production and utilization.
  • Applications of clean alternative fuels in IC engines.
  • Hydro-electric power generation and its different types.
  • Hybrid energy systems.
  • Energy storages.
  • Cost analysis of different clean technologies.

Course Overview:

Clean energy technology refers to any process, product or service that reduces negative environmental impacts through significant energy efficiency improvements, sustainable use of resources or environmental protection activities. Clean energy technologies also endure economic growth by enhancing the supply of energy demand and tackling environmental challenges and their impacts due to the use of other conventional sources of energy. Clean technology includes a broad range of technology related to recycling, renewable energy (wind power, solar power, biomass, hydropower, geothermal, biofuels, etc), information technology, green transportation, electric motors, green chemistry, lightning, greywater, etc.

The proposed event will basically focus on the clean energy technologies, such as solar energy, wind power, biofuels, biomass, hydropower, hydrogen energy, clean coal technology and related environmental issues. India is one of the largest energy producing countries from renewable sources. In the electricity sector, renewable energy (excluding large hydro) accounted for 20% of the total installed power capacity (69.02 GW). A brief description and fundamentals of these renewable energy technologies will be discussed in the proposed course. This event will focus on energy efficiency, environmentally sustainable technologies and will also discuss on Indian renewable energy scenario focusing mainly the North-eastern region. Different clean energy technologies will be discussed broadly such as:

Solar energy deals with conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity either directly by photovoltaic (PV), indirectly by concentrated solar or a combination of both. Concept and application of both this technologies will be discussed in a broader sense. Moreover, the working principles, utilization and application of solar flat plate collector, solar pond, solar distillation unit and solar refrigeration units will be conferred in detail. Wind power and its generation of electricity from naturally occurring wind will be broadly discussed along with its uses, applications and future scopes. The course also includes biomass energy utilization, their different sources and uses as a renewable energy. Biofuels which includes biodiesels, biogas, producer gas, natural gas, their production and utilization in various fields will be broadly covered in the course. Lectures related to gasification technologies i.e. fixed bed and fluidized bed gasification process will be delivered. Moreover, the event will also focus on applications of clean alternative fuels in IC engines. Hydro-electric power generation i.e. harnessing electricity from running water and their different types will be discussed.

Furthermore, the discussion session will also cover various aspects of hybrid energy systems, energy storages, different challenges in clean energy technologies which involves rapid increase in energy consumption, dependent on the imports of oil and gas from foreign countries, electricity shortages, and climatic changes. The discussion session will also cover cost analysis of different clean technologies, their advantages, clean energy scenario in India particularly in North East India and their future prospects.

ELIGIBILITY:

The course is open to faculty members and research scholars from TEQIP mapped Institutions/Engineering Colleges/ATUs. No course fee is charged. TA & DA for the eligible participants will be reimbursed from their respective institutions.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

Number of seats: 30.

Selection will be based on First cum first served ba¬sis and subject to the deposition of refundable fee (Rs 2000.00) in the form of demand draft in favor of Registrar, IIT Guwahati, Guwahati, Assam 781039.

BOARDING AND LODGING:

Boarding and lodging facilities (Guest House/Hostel rooms or other permissible accommodation) will be provided for the participants from TEQIP mapped institutions.
