My lab and
research group try to address the research questions in areas of
Applied Biodiversity with special reference to bioresources of
Northeast India using an integrative approach.
year the global losses in biodiversity and ongoing development
pressures on the environment have instigated bio conservation, need
of the hour. Zingiberaceae being a plant family of medicinally
important plant species, its conservation is of paramount nature.
Along with the conservation the importance of documenting the
medicinal usage in folklore is felt so that these valuable leads
could be investigated. The conservation of the plant species is
incumbent upon its identification which in turn requires an
agreeable classification. The work in authors’ laboratory is aimed
at documenting the ethno-medicinal usage of plants belonging to this
family, construction of a database for dissemination of the
knowledge, genome composition and reconstruction of phylogeny using
organellar genome (Tushar et al 2010, Das et al 2012; Basak et al
2014). In brief applied biodiversity group is tapping
Zingiberaceae from wilderness to mining ‘OMICS’.
Less arable land, weather extremities, increased fuel
and energy costs and society sensitivity towards gene transfer are
the major impeding hurdles for global agricultural food security.
Tapping the potential of biological fuel sources will be key in the
future. Research in the author’s laboratory contributes to the
genetic, molecular and biochemical knowledge of the tree Pongam (Kesari
et al, 2009; Rimjhim et al, 2013; Aadi et al, 2014). In spite of
huge potential, many questions remain unanswered about the overall
utility of oil-yielding crops as a biofuel feedstock. Step-by step
holistic approach is being carried out in the authors group so as to
tease out the finer details and set a model biofuel crop for next
generation sequencing and genomic diversity studies. Long term
objective is to develop, the necessary knowledge and range of
technologies to improve biofuel crops with more efficient biofuel
