The Department of Biotechnology at IIT Guwahati has reached a notable point at National level and has emerged as a leader in Biotechnology in the North East of India. In the last 7 years it has performed remarkably well in terms of developing infrastructure and teaching curriculum, creating research facilities, research output and project grants. The amount and number of research grants, the volume of publications and the number of growing accolades (by students and faculty members) are tremendous. Achievements and success with human and social values are now a regular affair. With our very young, dynamic and dedicated Departmental team we have been able to reach this level and are able to run this realty show.

Eligibility: Students are admitted to B.Tech. Programme through IIT JEE

Do I need Biology Background?

No!

Understanding modern biology requires knowledge in physics and chemistry of biological systems, whereas, mathematical and analytical skills are essential to survive in any field of science and technology. The B. Tech in biotechnology course at IIT Guwahati, attempts to satisfy all these requirements. The course has been developed to build your knowledge step by step, including the essential aspects of biology.

Course structure of B. Tech Biotechnology:

The B. Tech in Biotechnology course at IIT Guwahati, has two main components - core courses and electives. Core courses deals with courses on basic engineering like engineering mechanics; courses on chemical engineering and industrial biotechnology; and basic sciences, like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry. Each of these core courses are exhaustive in nature and intended to build your knowledge from scratch. 

Along with the core courses, it offers a large number of elective courses on diverse topics from computational biology to nano-biotechnology. These elective courses are to hone your skills on the cutting edge subjects in biotechnology.

Apart, from departmental courses, one can also opt for several other elective courses from other departments like Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, depending on interest.

After B. Tech?

Biotechnology is an emerging field that covers almost every aspect of human activities, from health care to agriculture. IIT Guwahati offers the scope to explore multiple professional avenues in diverse fields. All of our past students are well placed, and most of them got placed before the completion of their course. Over the years, students of our department were absorbed in various industries, including Information Technology, Oil & Petrochemicals, and service sector industries. 

Many of our alumni opted for MBA at leading management institutes of India at IIMs and some have moved to world renowned institutions for higher studies. Over the years our alumni joined Institutes like John Hopkins University, Georgia Tech, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Duke University in different disciplines of Biotechnology such as Bioinformatics, Environmental Sciences, Biochemical Engineering and Computer Sciences to pursue MS/PhD.
