Cells communicate using molecular cues. Such communication involves multiple steps of chemical reactions and eventually leads to changes in certain cellular functions/behaviors. For example, growth factor released by one cell can trigger a cascade of events in a neighboring cell, thereby triggering excessive proliferation. Even within a cell, information is transferred using intricate molecular pathways. Many molecular pathways are working simultaneously inside a living cell. Though each of these pathways has some independent components, they are mostly connected with each other creating a giant network of communication. Though complex, these molecular pathways are essential for normal cellular functions. And changes in these circuitries often lead to cellular dysfunction and even cause diseases like cancer. We are interested in understanding such inter-connected cellular communication systems. Particularly, we are interested to know the effect of architecture, kinetics and integration of such molecular pathways on vital cellular processes.  We use experimental as well as theoretical tools to understand how information is carried and processed in such signaling networks. We are also involved in developing molecules that can target particular signal transduction pathway. Such a molecule can be used to modulate an aberrant pathway involved in a particular disease.

For Prospective Ph. D students: We are looking for students who want to work at the interface of Mathematical Biology and Experimental Biology. We work in the broad area of Systems Biology in Cell Signaling. We are interested in molecular networks, stochastic cellular processes, non-genetic heterogeneity. You should be comfortable with 12th standard Mathematics (Graduate-level math would be better), computer programming and should have general concepts of biology. The online application for admission in the Ph. D Programmes in December 2017 at IIT Guwahati is now open. To apply click here:
