Dr. A. S. Achalkumar did his BSc in SDM College, Ujire, DK District in Karnataka and later on completed his MSc at Mangalore University. This followed a two year stint on the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds at Syngene International, Biocon Ltd., Bangalore. Later in 2003, he joined the group of Dr. C. V. Yelamaggad at Centre for Nano and Soft Matter Research (previously known as Centre for Liquid Crystal Research), Bangalore to pursue his PhD. Here he worked on the synthesis and characterization of Liquid Crystals. After completing his PhD in 2007 he joined the group of Prof. Richard J. Bushby and Prof. Stephen D. Evans in the Centre for Molecular Nano Sciences (previously known as Centre for Self-organizing Molecular Systems) at University of Leeds, UK as a postdoctoral fellow. Here he worked on the self-assembly of lipid bilayers and photopatternable SAMs. After finishing his assignment in UK in 2009, he moved to Bioinspired Materials Team, RIKEN Advanced Science Institute at Wakoshi, Japan. There he worked with Prof. Yasuhiro Ishida and Prof. Takuzo Aida on molecular imprinted polymers and Liquid Crystals chiral reaction media. In 2011, he was appointed as an assistant professor at the Chemistry Department of IIT-Guwahati. He was promoted to Associate Professor position in 2015. His research interests include supramolecular chemistry, Liquid crystals, SAMs, organogels organic electronics and biomembranes.
