DECEMBER 2018 SESSION ADMISSION TO PHD PROGRAMMES

 

Types/Categories of PhD Students(Studentship)

Regular and Full Time:

A student in Regular and Full Time Category works full-time for his/her PhD thesis.  He/she receives assistantship from IIT Guwahati or fellowship from CSIR/UGC or any other recognized funding agency.

 

The following are the criteria for receiving assistantship/fellowship:

 

  B.E./ B.Tech. or equivalent with valid and qualifying GATE score [valid and qualifying CEED score (for Dept. of Design)] above the prescribed cut off level.

  M.Sc. or equivalent with valid and qualifying GATE score above the prescribed cut off level/ NET(JRF)/ INSPIRE qualification.

●  M.A. in Humanities and Social Sciences Subjects or equivalent with valid NET qualification.

●  M.E./M.Tech./M.Des. or equivalent.

 

GATE/CEED/NET/INSPIRE score/certificate requirement is exempted for

●  a candidate with Bachelor's (B.Tech./B.Des.) degree or Master's (M.A./M.Sc.) degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0 in a 10-point scale

(OR)

  a candidate with M.E./ M.Tech./ M.Des. degree or equivalent.

 

Sponsored and Full Time:

A student in Sponsored and Full Time Category is sponsored by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, government organization or industry for doing PhD at IIT Guwahati on a full-time basis. He/ She must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. IIT Guwahati does NOT provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (See: Format) from the employer must be uploaded with the online application.

 

Employed and Part Time:

A student in Employed and Part Time Category is a professionally employed person (including regular employee of IIT Guwahati), who pursues the PhD Programme while continuing the duties of his/her service. He/she should be able to attend the classes of PhD coursework.He/she works part-time for his/her PhD thesis. He/She must be currently a regular employee of his/her organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. IIT Guwahati does NOT provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. No Objection Certificate (See: Format) from the employer must be uploaded with the online application.

 

Self-Financed and Full Time:

A student in Self-Financed and Full Time Category pursues the PhD programme at IIT Guwahati without getting financial assistantship from IIT Guwahati or any other funding agency and works full-time for his/her PhD thesis.

 

Self-Financed and Part Time:

A student in Self-Financed and Part Time Category pursues the PhD programme at IIT Guwahati without getting financial assistantship from IIT Guwahati or any other funding agency and works part-time for his/her PhD thesis. He/she should be able to attend the classes of PhD coursework.

 

Project Staff and Full Time:

A student in Project Staff and Full Time Category is a person who is employed in a sponsored (R&D) project of IIT Guwahati and is admitted to the PhD Programme of IIT Guwahati to work on a full-time basis for his/her PhD thesis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (See: Format) from the R&D must be uploaded with the online application.

 

Project Staff and Part Time:

A student in Project Staff and Part Time Category is a person who is employed in a sponsored (R&D) project of IIT Guwahati and is admitted to the PhD Programme of IIT Guwahati to work on a part-time basis for his/her PhD thesis. The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. If the project gets completed before the student completes his/her PhD Programme, his/her category will be converted to that of SELF-FINANCED unless he/she is granted an assistantship/fellowship from the Institute or any other agency. No Objection Certificate (See: Format) from the R&D must be uploaded with the online application.

 

External and Part Time:

A student in External and Part Time Category is a person who is employed in an R&D organization/academic institution/industry having adequate research facilities. He/she carries out PhD thesis research work on a part-time basis, mainly at his/her parent organization under a Local Supervisor but with the overall guidance provided by a faculty member (IITG Main Supervisor). He/she must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least one year of professional experience in the respective field. IIT Guwahati does NOT provide any assistantship/fellowship to such a student. Sponsorship letter (See: Format) from the employer must be uploaded with the online application.

 

 

Note: For students pursuing PhD on part-time basis, the hostel accommodation is NOT provided.If hostel accommodation is needed (for example, during course work), they have to request for it and pay the required fees for it.
